UNION UNIVERSITY GRADUATES 323 IN SPRING COMMENCEMENT EXERCISES

JACKSON, June 6-- Union University graduated a May class of 323 seniors during the University's 171st annual commencement exercises Saturday, May 25. An additional 119 seniors participated in anticipation of completing their degrees this summer.

U.S. Representative Ed Bryant, representing Tennessee's seventh congressional district, delivered the University's commencement address, and Charles Taylor, retired chair of the department of philosophy and religion at Radford University, served as baccalaureate speaker.

Kevin Trowbridge, a communication arts major from Horse Cave, Ky., was awarded the Elizabeth Tigrett Medal, an award honoring the outstanding member of the class of 1996.

Highest academic achievement awards were presented to Tina Joslin, a liberal studies major from Dyersburg, Tenn., and Dale Hill, a nursing major from Memphis, Tenn.

Carolyn Townsend McAfee, a 1961 Union graduate, received an honorary doctor of humanics for her philanthropic efforts and accomplishments in the field of music, and Ader Alves de Assis, president of Colegio Batiste Mineiro in Belo-Horizonte, Brazil, received an honorary doctor of divinity.
