HYRAN BAREFOOT NAMED OUTSTANDING EDUCATOR BY SOUTHERN BAPTIST EDUCATION COMMITTEE

JACKSON, July 22- Hyran E. Barefoot, chancellor of Union University, recently received the Charles D. Johnson Outstanding Educator Award at the annual meeting of the Association of Southern Baptist Colleges and Schools in Pipestem, West Virginia.

The award, established by the Education Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention, is presented annually to a person who has made a significant contribution to Southern Baptist higher education.

"As I visited more than 50 Southern Baptist college campuses, I found a number of leaders who have sought the wise counsel of Dr. Barefoot," Stephen P. Carleton, executive director-treasurer of the Education Commission, said. "He has always given his advice with wisdom and humor, and is regarded by many as the finest teacher they ever had."

Barefoot retired this spring after a 37-year career at Union University, where he served as a professor, dean, and administrator. Following a ten year tenure as president of the University, Barefoot stepped down to pursue a part-time position as Union's chancellor.

Recipients of the award are selected by members of the Education Commission's administrative committee. Established in honor of Dr. Charles D. Johnson, who authored Higher Education of Southern Baptists and served as chairman of the education commission from 1932 to 1953, the award recognizes individuals who demonstrate dedication to Christian higher education through Southern Baptist institutions.
