JACKSON, August 7-- In his first meeting with Union University's full board of trustees, David S. Dockery, Union's 15th president, introduced members of the new President's cabinet and unveiled key aspects of a new vision statement for the University.
Dockery, who assumed the presidency June 1, introduced members of the new cabinet, noting that this talented group of administrators makes up one of the finest leadership teams found on any campus in this country."
"With all the talk this summer about the dream team, I am pleased to introduce Union's 'Dream Team,' " Dockery said in introducing the cabinet, which includes: Howard Newell, provost; Michael Duduit, executive vice president; Gary Carter, vice president for business services; Charles Fowler, vice president for student services; John Adams, vice president for campus ministries and church services; James Baggett, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences; Carla Sanderson, dean of the School of Nursing; Don Lester, dean of the McAfee School of Business Administration; Tom Rosebrough, dean of the School of Education and Human Studies; Hal Poe, dean of academic resources and information services; Jimmy Davis, executive director of institutional research; Cindy Meredith, assistant to the president for university operations; and Jackie Bobbitt, administrative assistant to the president.
Dockery shared his commitment for Union to be an excellence-driven, Christ-centered, people-focused, future-directed institution. Following a summary of the University's past, Dockery said that moving forward to the 21st century requires a dynamic vision that will:
"It is my hope for Union to become a Great Commandment institution where faculty and staff will invest themselves in students, helping them develop Christian minds and hearts in order to become leaders and change-agents in the world," Dockery said.
After heartily affirming the president's report, trustees unanimously elected new leadership for the 1996-97 academic year. John Drinnon, a businessman from Germantown, was re-elected chairman; Floyd Flippen, an attorney from Humboldt, was elected vice chairman, and Max Walker, pastor of First Baptist Church, Selmer, was elected secretary.
Union University, located in Jackson, Tenn., is a four-year, liberal arts university affiliated with the Tennessee Baptist Convention. Founded in 1823, the 2,000-student institution is the oldest university in the Southern Baptist Convention.
