NEWSONG TO HEADLINE INAUGURAL CONCERT FOR DAVID DOCKERY OCT. 14 AT UNION UNIVERSITY

JACKSON, October 1-- Chart-topping Christian pop group Newsong will headline a free outdoor concert Monday, Oct. 14, at 8 p.m. on the South lawn of Union University's campus. The three-act show kicks off inaugural festivities honoring Union University's 15th president, David S. Dockery.

Newsong has earned a reputation as one of contemporary Christian music's most popular and enduring acts, with six of the band's singles reaching number one on industry charts and four more releases reaching the top ten. The group received a 1994 Dove Award nomination for Group of the Year on the strength of their latest release, People Get Ready, and a previous album, Light Your World, was a 1990 Dove nominee for Album of the Year.

Newsong has toured internationally, with recent appearances in the Ukraine and the former Soviet Union. The group was also a featured act during Billy Graham's 1992 Pacific Northwest Crusade.

The concert features two opening acts, including the fresh lyrics and melodies of up-and-coming Christian pop artist Erin O' Donnell, and the harmonies of Jackson-based ensemble A Cross Between, featuring former members of Acapella Vocal Band.

The concert is free and open to the public. Festival seating will be available near the "U" (South campus lawn, adjacent to tennis courts). Individuals planning to attend should bring blankets; no lawn chairs will be allowed. For information, call Union's office of admissions at (901) 661-5000 or 1-800-33UNION.
