Join us for another fun Family Weekend at Union University.  Family Weekend 2003 is two action packed days of programming for Union students and their families.  There’s something for everyone at Family Weekend 2003: the new family potato sack race to kick off Saturday’s flag football games, stimulating parent workshops, toe tapping dinner entertainment, the annual Variety Show and more.  Make plans now to bring the whole family!

Workshop Options Friday, October 24

  1. 1:00 p.m.
    Creative Memories - Hosted by Ms. Julie Powell, Instructor PEWS (Physical Education, Wellness, and Sport), Creative Memories Consultant

    "These days would be remembered and kept from generation to generation and celebrated by every family..." Esther 9:28. Join Creative Memories Consultant Julie Powell in an educational hands-on class to help remember your student's days at Union! You will learn step-by-step how to turn your boxes of photos and memorabilia into keepsake, photo-safe albums. Learn techniques including cropping, layout, mounting, journaling, with instruction from a trained Creative Memories Consultant. You will also complete your first page in this class, so bring 6-8 photos relating to one event. All other materials and educational handouts will be provided.
  2. 2:00 p.m.
    Gallery Talk - Hosted by Lee Benson, Art Faculty Member

    Take a tour through Union’s amazing art gallery with Lee Benson, who will give insight to featured artist John Bjerklie. Bjerklie currently resides in Brooklyn, New York and is the curator for the American Bible Society in New York City. He has been in a number of exhibitions in the U.S. as well as international exhibitions in Japan and France.

    It's YOUR History Too!-Hosted by Ms. Brenda Alexander, Assistant Professor of History and Mrs. Bev Vos, Business Services

    Bev and Brenda will share with you how their discoveries of their individual families' histories fit in with all of history. Through these discoveries they will teach you how to discover your own family story and begin genealogy research.
  4. 4:00 p.m.
    Study Abroad Opportunities - Hosted by the Institute for International and Intercultural Studies and Language Department

    Learn about the incredible educational opportunities that allow your son or daughter to earn academic credit outside of the United States. Through this remarkable program, students can earn credit hours in their discipline or satisfy general core curriculum requirements in locations such as Asia, Latin America, Europe, and the Mediterranean Rim. Also, hear from a panel of Union students who will share their personal experiences and life lessons from studying abroad.
  5. 5:00 p.m.
    Photo Chat - Hosted by Jim Veneman of University Relations

    Do all of your pictures look the same? Mr. Jim will help you change that. Come to this workshop and learn new ways to add pizzazz to your photo collection.

    The Empty Nest Syndrome-Hosted by Dr. Joanne Stephenson, Faculty Member of Psychology Department.

    Now that your kids are growing up, how do you deal with the empty nest? Joanne will lead you through discussion and ideas to adapt and grow from this inevitable syndrome.
  2. 2:00 p.m.
    When Maslow Talks, Career Services Listens! - Hosted by Mrs. Jacqueline Taylor, Director of Career Services & Mrs. Reneé Jones, Special Events Coordinator.

    Jacqueline Taylor and Reneé Jones will discuss how Career Services integrates Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs (physiological, safety, belonging, esteem, and self-actualization) into its Career planning and development process. Understanding ones position in life is the key to planning for a future with positive results, personally and professionally. This session will share Career Services' strategy for meeting the holistic needs of Union University students as well as Career Services' commitment to helping students understand their calling and career!
  3. 3:00 p.m.
    Investing and Tax Advantages-Hosted by Dr. Howard and Mrs. Debbie Newell, Faculty Members in the School of Business Administration.

    Howard and Debbie will discuss investing for your retirement and future education expenses. Tax laws will be covered with an emphasis on new tax changes relating to higher education. Your questions and active participation will be encouraged.
  4. 4:00 p.m.
    Going Global with GO Trips! - Hosted by Todd Brady, Minister to the University and Suzanne Mosley, Director of Student Outreach

    Attend this fascinating session to discover the many mission opportunities (both in and outside the United States) for your son or daughter to impact the world and develop a global mind set. Various topics will be addressed from fund-raising to safety of international travel. Psalm 67:1-3a: “God be gracious to us and bless us, And cause his face to shine upon us-- That Your way may be known on the earth, Your salvation among all nations. Let the peoples praise you, O God; Let all the peoples praise you.”

  3. Country Inn & Suites – Located one mile from campus. This hotel includes oversized king or double-queen rooms in a country décor. The hotel also offers free continental breakfast, an outdoor pool, free local calling, as well as a special $55.00 Family Weekend rate. Call (731) 660-0077.

AmeriHost Inn – Conveniently located on Vann Drive near Union’s campus, AmeriHost offers single king or double-twin rooms, free continental breakfast, exercise facilities, and heated indoor pool with whirlpool. Sibling Sleepover

Bring your sleeping bag and camp out in your brother or sister’s room! Find out what college life at Union is really like and how messy (or clean) your brother or sister keeps their room. Each student must register his or her sibling at the Commons by Friday, October 24, 2003 at 6:00 p.m.

*Children over 7 years of age may not sleep over in the sibling’s room if the sibling is of the opposite sex. Please make appropriate arrangements with friends of the same sex. Union students are responsible for their siblings staying in their room and must accompany them at all times.
