Jump into the fun of Family Weekend at Union University!  Family Weekend 2004 is two action packed days of programming for Union students and their families.  There’s something for everyone at Family Weekend 2004: delicious Friday night banquet with a family portrait opportunity, chocolate nights with Union’s jazz band, the annual family potato sack race to kick off Saturday’s flag football games, stimulating parent workshops, local caricature artist and petting zoo for the kids (and grown-ups too), student All-Sing performance and more.  Make plans now to bring the whole family!

Workshop Options Friday, October 1

A. 1:15 p.m.
Residence Life Q & A – Hosted by Kelly Elliott, Resident Director of McAfee Residence Complex, MS counseling psychology, MA physical education

Join Resident Director Kelly Elliot as she gives insight to the wonderful educational opportunities that your son and daughter will experience in Union’s Residence Life Program; there will be plenty of time for questions. Kelly is a wife and mother of two and a recent addition to the Student Services team.

B. 2:15 p.m.
The Marriage Crisis in America – Hosted by Dr. David Gushee, Graves Professor of Moral Philosophy and Senior Fellow of the Center for Christian Leadership

Join popular Christian Studies professor and author, Dr. David Gushee, as he draws from his recent book, Getting Marriage Right, exploring what happened to the institution of marriage and how to rethink marriage from a biblical perspective. Dr. Gushee is a husband and proud father of four children.

C. 3:15 p.m.
Stressed Out? – Hosted by Dr. Joanne Stephenson, Faculty Member of Psychology Department.

We all deal with stress. Joanne will share simple strategies for a healthier and happier life. The class will practice several techniques and will leave more relaxed, armed with new skills and resources to “mellow out.”

D. 4:15 p.m.
Investing and Tax Advantages – Hosted by Dr. Howard and Mrs. Debbie Newell, Faculty Members in the School of Business Administration.

Howard and Debbie will discuss investing for your retirement and future education expenses. Tax laws will be covered with an emphasis on new tax changes relating to higher education. Your questions and active participation will be encouraged.

E. 5:15 p.m.
Culture-Crossing and Culture-Shaping Educational Opportunities – Hosted by the Institute for International and Intercultural Studies and Language Department

Learn about the incredible educational opportunities that allow your son or daughter to earn academic credit both inside and outside of the United States. Through this remarkable program, students can earn credit hours in their discipline or satisfy general core curriculum requirements in locations such as Asia, Latin America, Europe, and the Mediterranean Rim. Students can also earn credit from off-campus domestic programs such as the Focus on the Family Institute, American Studies Program in Washington, DC, the Contemporary Music Center on Martha's Vineyard and the Los Angeles Film Studies Center. Hear from a panel of Union students who will share their personal experiences and life lessons from studying abroad.

When Maslow Talks, Career Services Listens! - Hosted by Mrs. Jacqueline Taylor, Director of Career Services & Mrs. Reneé Jones, Assistant Director.

Jacqueline Taylor and Reneé Jones will discuss how Career Services integrates Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs (physiological, safety, belonging, esteem, and self-actualization) into its Career planning and development process both on the micro and macro levels. Understanding one's position in life is the key to planning for a future with positive results, personally and professionally. This session will share Career Services' strategy for meeting the holistic needs of Union University students as well as Career Services' commitment to helping students understand their life calling for a fulfilling career!

G. 1:00 p.m.
Praying for your College Student – Hosted by Dr. Beth Madison, Adjunct Faculty Member and author of Standing Firm…Pressing On: Daily Devotions for Students Preparing for Missions & Mandy Beth Niven, Administrative Assistant in the office of Campus Ministries and Coordinator of Klemata, Union’s Women’s Ministry.

Join Dr. Beth Madison and Mandy Beth Niven as they share how to spiritually support and encourage your son or daughter while away at college. Workshop attendees will learn and share success stories on how to start and maintain a disciplined yet meaningful devotional life, praying daily for your child.

H. 2:00 p.m.
The Millennial Generation – Hosted by Dr. Kimberly Thornbury, Dean of Students.

Dr. Thornbury will explore the Millenials’ “Seven Core Traits” and other generational characteristics of those born from 1982-2002. If you are the parent of a “millennial” this session will be informative and provide opportunities for discussion on the topic of parenting a millennial.

Going Global with GO Trips! - Hosted by Suzanne Mosley, Director of Student Outreach & Andy Pettigrew, Director of Student Ministries

Attend this fascinating session to discover the many mission opportunities (both in and outside the United States) for your son or daughter to impact the world and develop a global mind set. Various topics will be addressed from fund-raising to safety of international travel. Psalm 67:1-3a: “God be gracious to us and bless us, And cause his face to shine upon us-- That Your way may be known on the earth, Your salvation among all nations. Let the peoples praise you, O God; Let all the peoples praise you.”

J. 4:00 p.m.
Creative Memories – Hosted by Ms. Julie Powell, Instructor PEWS (Physical Education, Wellness, and Sport), Creative Memories Consultant

"These days would be remembered and kept from generation to generation and celebrated by every family..." Esther 9:28. Join Creative Memories Consultant Julie Powell in an educational hands-on class to help remember your student's days at Union! You will learn step-by-step how to turn your boxes of photos and memorabilia into keepsake, photo-safe albums. You will also complete your first page in this class, so bring 6-8 photos relating to one event. All other materials and educational handouts will be provided.

Sibling Sleepover

Bring your sleeping bag and camp out in your brother or sister’s room! Find out what college life at Union is really like and how messy (or clean) your brother or sister keeps their room. Each student must register his or her sibling* at the Commons by Friday, October 1, 2004 at 6:00 p.m.

*Children over 7 years of age may not sleep over in the sibling’s room if the sibling is of the opposite sex. Please make appropriate arrangements with friends of the same sex. Union students are responsible for their siblings staying in their room and must accompany them at all times.
