Stomp Out Stigma 2019BSW Students Hold Stomp Out Stigma 5K

In April 2019, our BSW students worked together to hold the annual Stomp Out Stigma 5K Run/1 Mile Walk on Union’s campus. The funds raised from the event were to benefit NAMI Madison County. The run was very well attended with almost 70 runners/walkers registered.

The Grand Marshal of the event was Mr. Steve Beverley. The choir from Madison Academic High School presented the National Anthem before the race began.

Our students did a fantastic job coordinating the event from beginning to end! We are grateful for the support from Union students, faculty, and the Jackson community that helped make the Stomp Out Stigma event a great success.

We want to thank our Stomp Out Stigma sponsors, which were: JACOA, Coca-Cola, State Farm – Wes Harris, and the Bank of Jackson. Without their generous support, the Stomp Out Stigma 5K would not have been possible!

Bullying Stops Here workshopMSW Students Host Anti-Bullying Event in Germantown

Our MSW Students from Germantown held an event at the Lester Community Center in the Binghampton community called "Bullying Stops Here" on December 1, 2018. The event helped the participants learn to identify bullying and the right way to respond when they or someone they know is being bullied.

The event was a great success and was made possible by many supporters in the community. We are proud of our students for identifying this need in the community and creating an event to help meet the need!

The MSW students are enrolled in the Social Work Practice with Communities and Organizations class, and were led by Union professor, Patricia Clark-Ellis.

Student participate in a Mental Health First Aid classMental Health First Aid Training for BSW Students

Several of our BSW students, both traditional undergraduate and Adult Studies, participated in an 8-hour Mental Health First Aid training course at Luther Hall. The class was arraigned by Professor Rebecca Bohner for her Populations at Risk course. The students learned the most effective methods of identifying, understanding, and responding to people who find themselves in a crisis situation. The course included recognizing risk factors and warning signs, a 5-step action plan to help a person experiencing a mental health crisis, and information on where to turn for help.

We want to extend a special thanks to Mr. Sean Jones from Carey Counseling who served as the trainer for the course. It was a great experience for the students who participated!

Nicaragua_5209-600.jpgStudy Tour Winter Term 2014

During the January 2014 winter term, the School of Social Work took a study tour to Nicaragua. The trip was led by adjunct professor Donald Jordan and associate professor Ginny Schwindt. Eight BSW and MSW students went, providing 6 hours of elective credit. The group partnered with El Ayudante in Leon, Nicaragua. The students learned about the Nicaraguan culture, its differences to American culture, and its diversity within Nicaragua. They also learned about community development in Nicaragua and how to best practice it. The students visited communities in and around Leon learning about them and their residents. Students had the opportunity to talk to a local doctor, a family ministries worker (their DCS worker), a nursing home administrator, community pastors and leaders, and teachers.   They also spent time with children in the care of El Ayudante.
