Three dead in Tennessee storms
Tornadoes may have hit in at least 6 counties
NASHVILLE, Tennessee (CNN) -- Heavy storms -- possibly with tornadoes --
battered parts of Tennessee overnight, killing three people and injuring
others, emergency officials said Sunday.
Two residents of a mobile home east of Clarksville died when the
structure was blown off of its foundation, according to Lynne Richlen, a
Tennessee Emergency Management Agency operations officer.
The National Weather Service in Nashville said two tornadoes apparently
touched down in that area near the Kentucky state line. One was in
Montgomery County, 13 miles east of Clarksville, and another was near
Portland in Sumner County.
"Indications on the radar were that they were tornadoes. Until the
damage is inspected, it won't be confirmed," said Bobby Boyd, a Nashville
meteorologist.
In western Tennessee, a person died near Huntingdon in Carroll County
when a mobile home turned over, Richlen said. Officials said two homes and
a patrol car in Tipton County and a nursing home in Bells were damaged.
Minor injuries were reported in Crockett and Tipton counties.
There were some spotter reports of tornadoes in Crockett, Madison,
Henderson and Carroll counties, said Scott McNeil, a meteorologist in
Memphis.
He said 20 houses were damaged in a subdivision near Jackson and there
were scattered reports of structural damage, including some at Union
University near Jackson.
"I'd be real surprised if we can't confirm" tornadoes, McNeil said.
