According to Gary Williams, executive director for Alumni Services at Union, alumni volunteers are incredibly effective in their efforts to help the university. If you’ve ever wondered how you could get back in touch with your alma mater, here’s some great information from Gary for you to know!

What do Union volunteers mean specifically to Alumni Services?

Union University volunteers mean everything to us! From a very practical perspective, they enhance our service to our constituents and save us dollars by pro-viding services that would normally be done by some-one else, freeing our regular staff to perform other duties.

Also, their attitudes and spirits are contagious! As they work here in our offices, a spirit of optimism is present that absolutely pervades the atmosphere in which we work. And as they help, they become more aware of the services that we provide to our alumni and friends and are great public relations representatives to our publics!

How do volunteers help in telling the Union story?

Our alumni volunteers play a large part in telling the Union story. By being heavily involved in everything from service on the National Alumni Association Board of Directors, to assisting with preparations for and activities surrounding homecoming and graduation, to stuffing envelopes for major mailings, our alumni provide services to the university that are incomparable!

What are the many ways that Union uses volunteers?

We have dozens of volunteers who serve the university in a variety of ways – one way is through service on one of our four boards including the University Board of Trustees, the Board of Presidential Associates, the President’s Advisory Council and the National Alumni Association Board of Directors.

Volunteers also give an invaluable service within our athletic organizations as “boosters” and supporters. They serve in many respects in Alumni Services by assisting with local alumni chapter meetings, as officers, organizers and hosts for regional events.

Preparations for Home-coming, the graduate luncheons, freshman orientation events and a multitude of other functions could never be facilitated so smoothly without the use of alumni volunteers.

Volunteers also assist us with mass mailing, phoning, and communication with our constituents on a regular basis. These folks who are involved because they want to be, encourage others to pick up the “Union University ball” and run with it!

How can Union grads who don’t live near Jackson stay involved?

Union grads who live a little bit too far away to be involved on a routine basis have numerous opportunities for involvement. They can serve as class agents for their graduating classes, attend and become involved in regional alumni chapters, continue to share the great things happening at Union with prospective students in their area high schools and churches. And, of course, they can attend Homecoming each February!

Also, regular contributions to the Alumni Scholarship Fund, regardless of the size of the contribution, have untold influence on the lives of hundreds of students who depend on scholarship support to attend the university. If alums want to be involved, they have a way!
