Union University Physics Program
Announcements
The physics program of Union University seeks to support science teaching in West Tennessee in a variety of ways. One of those ways is in maintaining an active physics program for training future science teachers and supporting current teachers through courses relevant to their discipline. For those wishing to certify in physics we have two offerings that might be of particular interest.
PHY 314 Intermediate Electricity and Magnetism, June and July 2003, three meetings a week in late afternoon. The prerequisite is the completion of one year of calculus-based general physics. The course will begin with a unit on vector algebra, calculus in three dimensions, and curvilinear coordinates. Once these mathematical foundations have been planted, the course proceeds to address electrostatic and magnetostatic fields (in vacuum and media), Laplace’s equation, multipole expansions, Maxwell’s equations, and conclude with electromagnetic waves.
PHY 311 Modern Physics will be offered Fall Semester of 2003. This course covers the physics of the 20th century and begins with an introduction to Einstein’s Special Relativity. Next, the wave properties of matter are discussed, followed by an introduction to quantum physics which deals with the structure of the atom. The course concludes with units on radiation, nuclear, and particle physics. (This course is sometimes referred to as the “third semester” of introductory physics.)
