Carl F.H. Henry Center for Christian Leadership

From the Director

Justin BarnardWelcome to Union University's Carl F.H. Henry Center for Christian Leadership!

In 1947, Dr. Carl F.H. Henry, the leading evangelical theologian of the twentieth century, published The Uneasy Conscience of Modern Fundamentalism. In that prescient work, Henry considered a troubling inability of many American Christians to apply Scriptural truths to the most pressing issues facing contemporary society. Henry urged Christian fundamentalists of his day to recognize that a Christian worldview contains the theological resources to address itself to a full range of social and cultural issues. Moreover, Henry decried modern fundamentalism's cultural disengagement writing that it "has ceased to challenge Caesar and Rome, as though in futile resignation and submission to the triumphant Renaissance mood."

Henry's prophetic call for cultural engagement still needs to be heeded today. Sadly, contemporary American evangelicalism arguably exists in a state of "futile resignation and submission" to the "triumphant" postmodernism and consumerism of the twenty-first century. Perhaps more than ever, our culture needs Christian leaders who, as Henry put it, are "armed to declare the implications" of the Gospel as a "solution for the politico-economic and sociological context for modern life."

Union's Henry Center for Christian Leadership exists to equip Christians for this challenge. Through a variety of programs, partnerships, and initiatives, both within Union University and in the community at-large, the Henry Center works to promote increased understanding of a Christian world and life view and its currency in the church, the academy, and society.

I encourage you to avail yourself of the growing body of resources on this website. My prayer is that they will edify as you "grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen."
