Haelim immigrated to the United States in 1976 with her parents and two younger sisters. She grew up in the suburbs of Washington, D.C. and is a three time alumna of the University of Maryland at College Park, where she received her M.F.A. in painting and sculpture. She is an Assistant Professor of Art at Union University in Jackson, TN. She is married to husband Henry, and they have a two-year-old son, Matthew. Her body of work represents very broad answers to complex questions of identity.
