After
completing both undergraduate and graduate studies at Union
University, Powell taught in public school before returning to Union
as the Sports Information Director in 1995. In addition to the
role of SID, Powell led the intramural program and taught part-time.
With the beginning of the Sport Management Program, Powell began
teaching full-time in 2000. Powell also works with the Teacher
Education Program for those students planning to teach in Physical
Education and Health. Powell earned a Doctorate of Education in
Sport Management and Leadership in 2009.
Powell has continued to play a role in the
Sports Information profession by serving as President of NAIA-SIDA
after spending several years on the Executive Board. When time
allows, the current SID at Union, lets Powell fill a role in keeping
statistics for Union's athletic teams. For the past several
years, Powell has served at the NAIA Women's Basketball National
Championship in Statistical Services and the NAIA Softball National
Championship as Media Coordinator.
Powell has enjoyed two trips to Italy with
the Study Abroad Program during winter term and loves to travel any
chance she gets. Travel goals include: traveling to five
places which require a passport, visiting all 50 states in the U.S.,
and making it to all of the major league baseball stadiums.
Current interests include scrapbooking and
photography. Any excuse to capture children on film is a
challenge. Powell has participated in mission trips to New
York City both through Union and outside groups. In addition
to these interests, she has worked with Disaster Relief and other
service projects.
