Union offers a wide range of study abroad scholarships to help make global learning accessible for every student. These awards support meaningful academic and cross-cultural experiences that strengthen students' calling, deepen their studies, and prepare them to engage the world with purpose. From endowed scholarships to external opportunities and 529 plan options, students can find several pathways to make international study both affordable and achievable.
The J.M. Powell Memorial Scholarship is an endowed scholarship. This Scholarship may be awarded for tuition or non-tuition-based expenses. The fund balance is determined each year by Student Financial Planning in conjunction with Business and Financial Services and the Union University Foundation. A student participating in an external study program may be awarded up to $1500 if they fulfill the criteria below.
The Cynthia P. Jayne Fellowship for Global Studies Award funds up to 20% of the total cost a student will incur for the study abroad experience, however the award should not exceed the total cost of tuition while studying abroad.
Traditional undergraduate students who were full-time in the spring semester may receive a tuition waiver for faculty-led study tours during the summer terms when the student pays in full for three hours of tuition for the trip, the student will receive a tuition waiver for up to three additional hours related to the trip.
Many students who use 529 plans (college savings accounts) to fund their education at UU can also use their 529 plan for study abroad. Study abroad expenses such as tuition and fees, program fees, room and board, and required textbooks are eligible to be funded with a 529 plan, just like they are in the United States.
Study abroad expenses that are not able to be covered with 529 plans include transportation, international health insurance, medical costs not covered by U.S. health insurance, basic living expenses, and any costs associated with an international cell phone.
