Dear Freshmen: The Reflections of a Senior

A post by

Lili Pettigrew in front of The Logos

For the fourth time in my life, I procrastinate packing, soak up time with family and start mentally gearing up for another year at Union. I am a senior now, so this is the last time I will have to do this. That's honestly pretty terrifying. This time next year, I could have a job, or not. I could be at home, or not. I could be in a different country, going to graduate school, moving to a big city — or not.

Whatever I'm doing, it won't be another undergraduate year at Union, which is wild. Time has absolutely flown by. As I reflect on this, I've come up with a couple of ideas that may help you as you begin your journey at Union. I've learned these things through experience and the wise people around me. What are the secrets of doing college well?

1. Survive freshman year.

"Well, duh," you might say, but here's what I mean: it's hard to balance school, late night social events and learning how to be an adult all at once. You go from being a kid to an adult in one night, and it's overwhelming. I wish I had a magic formula for you, but honestly, it just takes time. The mistakes you make during this year will only help you grow, so be patient with yourself. I promise it will get better!

2. Take your time to find your true friends.

One of the crazy things about freshman year is how many people you get to meet. Literally any of them could be your best friend forever! Who do you pick? If this is how you feel during Welcome Week, don't stress. It wasn't until my junior year that I actually felt like the friends I had would last me beyond college. This year, try to meet a lot of people, give yourself time to get to know them, and see how the relationships grow!

3. Join freshman council (or some other campus organization).

This is my shameless plug for SGA, but it's also an encouragement to become involved on campus. Find an organization or two that interests you and become invested in them. Life Groups, SAC, GO Trips, Jaxx and Jillz, and of course SGA are some great ones! Union is a really special place because it has so many opportunities, so take advantage of that.

4. Join a church.

This is probably the most important thing I could tell you. Growing close with a church family outside of the comfort of my parents was so impactful for my faith because it forced me to consider what I believed and why. The community of a church family is more encouraging and sanctifying than any other, and I cannot recommend it enough. Besides, the families in your church that you meet will sometimes make you free, home-cooked meals and provide an escape for you off campus. It's such a huge blessing, and I don't want you to miss out.

In the end, I believe that God will use each and every one of you to impact the others around you some way, and he will use this time to help you grow in your faith. You may have times that are tough, and you may have times that are stupidly fun, but whatever it is, remember that God has planned these next four years of your life. Just knowing that He is in control is the power that you need to help you thrive in freshman year and beyond. Praying for you all!
