Community Music Center

Posted July 11, 2023

It is with a deep sense of sadness that the Department of Music in consultation with Union University leadership has decided that all activities of the Community Music Center (CMC) will be suspended for the 2023-2024 academic year. This decision was not entered into lightly and was governed by several significant factors. The Department of Music is conducting an ongoing search for a new CMC Director, but at present a new director has not yet been identified. This in combination with other contributing factors, including fiscal and instructional matters, led to the decision to suspend activities.

As we look ahead, we hope to identify a new Director who will help re-envision the CMC to incorporate innovative music approaches that expand the current excellence of instruction, enhance the musical offerings to include innovative music methods (such as Music Technology, Worship Techniques, and Commercial Music styles), and provide curricular focus that continues to reflect the developing context and needs of our community. Please join us in prayer as we seek the Lord in launching these initiatives in an effort to provide excellence and Christ-centered music training for our community!

Thank you for the ongoing encouragement and support you have given to the CMC through the past number of years. We hope that you will continue to partner with us as the Lord helps to reestablish the program and to reemerge stronger and better equipped to serve our community. In the interim, we encourage you to check with your music teachers about their plans as it is possible that some will continue teaching from their homes. Another possible avenue for music training is to reach out to Molly Smith at the Fellowship Worship Arts Academy about availability of lessons and music classes.

We look forward to seeing all that the Lord will do through this process. May the Lord be honored and glorified!

In Christ,
Dr. John D. Kinchen, III
Chair, Department of Music
