JACKSON, Tenn.Aug. 21, 2017 — Karen C. Miller has been selected to fill the James and Shirley Porter Endowed Chair in Business in Union University’s McAfee School of Business.

Miller replaces Walton Padelford, who retired from Union in May.

Jason Garrett, dean of the McAfee School of Business, said the combination of Miller’s teaching, research and service made her the ideal candidate for the position.

“She has served in many leadership roles,” Garrett said. “She’s been heavily involved in our accounting programs. She’s one of our strongest researchers, and she continually ranks as one of our strongest in the classroom as well.”

The Porter Chair was established in memory of James and Shirley Porter. In her role, Miller will host or deliver at least one lecture per year to both the university and the West Tennessee business community, maintain an active research agenda, support entrepreneurship and actively participate in projects and initiatives to promote the McAfee School of Business, in addition to her regular duties as a faculty member.

Miller served as an accounting instructor at Union from 1998-2002. She returned to the university in 2004 and has served in a variety of faculty and research positions since then.

Miller completed her bachelor’s degree from Freed-Hardeman University, her master’s degree in accounting from the University of Tennessee at Martin and her Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Mississippi.
