Cardinal & Cream wins multiple awards at BCA student competition

JACKSON, Tenn.Nov. 19, 2024 — The Cardinal & Cream, Union University’s student publication, won several awards in this year’s Baptist Communicators Association Student Awards Competition.

Avery Chenault won the Grand Prize for Exceptional Achievement in Feature Writing for “Bikes By The Bomb Shelter,” which also secured first place in the “Feature Writing – First-Person Column/Blog” category.

“It’s always gratifying to see excellence in my students recognized,” said Ted Kluck, Union’s journalism professor. “While we don’t place ultimate value in how we do in subjective competitions, our students’ consistent performance in the BCA awards and the Southeast Journalism Conference shows not only that we are attracting top talent to our program, but that we are committed to joyfully developing that talent.”

In the audiovisual division, Toby Forehand and Ethan Voss won first place in the “Video: Storytelling – 1-3 minutes” category for their video “Annika Brooks: Be Nice To People And Wear What You Want.” Dawson Kinchen also won several honors in the division, including three first-place awards and two second-place awards in various categories.

The Cardinal & Cream Podcast earned second place in the “Audio: Broadcast/Podcast – Overall Show” category.

Lyla Dietz took first place in “Photography - Portrait: Studio” category, while in news writing, Katherine Anne Thierfelder won first place in the “Opinion/Editorial” category, Hunter Santoscoy won second place in the “Sports” category and Ethan Orwin won third place in “Arts and Entertainment.”

The publication's design also received recognition, with Faith Orr winning second place for the Spring 2024 edition cover in the “Print Publications: Magazine – Cover” category.

In the overall publication division, Thierfelder, Emmeline Arehart and Luke Barnard secured third place in the “Mixed Media Coverage” category. The spring 2024 edition of the Cardinal & Cream, led by Samuel Stettheimer as editor-in-chief, won second place in the “Print Publication: Magazine” category.

The BCA Awards competition featured 115 entries from various institutions including Baylor, California Baptist, Samford and Hannibal-LaGrange.
