Pharmaceutics
Area Specialist: Dr. Richard Addo
In the past years, our research on Pharmaceutics has focused increasingly on the development of a drug delivery system, and specific formulation and microencapsulation of drugs and proteins. In this area of research, we use spray drying techniques to formulate these microparticles that have useful advantages over the conventional methods. We have also been involved in the formulation of microparticles containing drugs for the treatment of Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD). The reason that inspired us to work on this disease is that it is generally prevalent in geriatric patients, and we feel passionate about helping those that are helpless and needy.
Currently, we have included and transitioned to mostly working on analyzing the stability of various compounded formulations to determine their beyond-use-date (BUD) in order to ensure their safety when given to patients. This is achieved by first developing various analytical techniques but more especially using Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography (UPLC) to simultaneously analyze these drugs, their metabolites, and their mixtures. This research has helped us secure grants from various stakeholders.
We are currently working with a funded grant on the evaluation of the stability of compounded pediatric drug suspensions in commercially available suspending vehicles. We plan to focus more on this as funding will allow. We have trained many students at a high level of scholarly activities, and we believe encouraging students to get involved in research is an essential contribution to research. Some of our works with our students and postdoctoral fellows have resulted in publications in peer-reviewed journals a book and some book chapters
