Student Involvement in Research
Research is a critical component of the PharmD program at Union University for the simple reason that we believe that students need exposure to many of the pressing needs and unsolved problems in science and healthcare today as well as the opportunity to address these needs. Many of our students go on to pursue residencies in a variety of healthcare settings. These residency programs value research experience and expect that their future residents will have had as much exposure to research as possible. Research is a core component of the residency as well.
At the UUCOP, we provide a vast array of opportunities for students to get involved in research with faculty. In the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, we offer research in Medicinal and Organic Chemistry, Pharmacology, Pharmacometrics, Pharmaceutics, and Social/Behavioral/Administrative Pharmacy. Our faculty works closely with students to mentor them and to train them how to utilize their own knowledge, skills, and talents to address unsolved problems.
How Do I Get Involved?
Students often begin research during their first year of pharmacy school.* Due to the incredible demands of the didactic curriculum as well as the time demands of research, most P1 or P2 students elect to work with faculty on projects during the summer months. During years 3 and 4, however, the UUCOP offers APPEs (Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences/rotations) in research, providing the student critical and protected time to work diligently on completing a project and presenting the results at a local, regional, or national conference.
*There may be limited opportunities of getting involved in research prior to matriculation into the UUCOP as a P1.
