The Communication Arts Department sponsors several student organizations designed to promote achievement within the field of communication arts. Majors and minors are extremely encouraged to become involved in organizations of his or her choice.
Alpha Psi Omega
Advisor: David Burke This national dramatic fraternity was founded at Fairmont State College, Fairmont, West Virginia, on August 12, 1925. The local chapter, Beta Mu, is composed of students who have been members of the Union University Players and have earned a set number of points, awarded for dramatic work. The chapter seeks to develop dramatic talent, to cultivate a taste for the best in drama, and to foster cultural dramatics.
Cardinal & Cream
Advisor: Dr. Michael Chute The Cardinal and Cream is the official campus newspaper of Union University. Budgeted as a part of the Communication Arts Department, the newspaper is published biweekly and is distributed to students, faculty, staff and administration without charge.
The Cardinal and Cream is written and edited by students under the guidance of a faculty advisor. Staff positions are provided for students who are interested in the field of journalism. The campus newspaper enhances the experiences of students in writing, layout, editing, photography, advertising and journalism administration.
Recognizing the right offered by the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America, and to upholding of those rights by the Fourteenth Amendment, Section 1, Clause 2, the newspaper’s staff will print articles, stories, features, cartoons, editorials and photographs that will follow basic journalism guidelines and responsible journalism principles. Recognizing that the newspaper is an official publication of the University and, therefore, deals with a restricted reader group, the newspaper will seek to present an accurate image of the University, will be aware of the heritage and life values of the University, and will seek to work cooperatively within the framework while at the same time trying to follow responsible journalistic principles.
An editorial board works closely with the advisor and oversees the publication. The newspaper is not subject to prior approval or censorship. This newspaper holds membership in Associated Collegiate Press, Southeastern Journalism Conference, and the Society for Collegiate Journalists.
Public Relations Student Society of America
Advisor: Ashley Fitch Blair Union University’s PRSSA chapter provides public relations/advertising majors and minors practical experience in the field. In keeping with the chapter’s motto “make connections. gain experience. see the future.,” PRSSA members work with local clients, take professional development trips, participate in professional networking opportunities and are eligible for $20,000 in annual competitive scholarship awards.
Union Association of Photographers
Advisor: Jim Veneman
Union Broadcasting Society
Advisor: Steve Beverly The Union Broadcasting Society exists for students interested in the broadcasting field. The Society plans to become affiliated with the student chapter of Radio and Television News Directors Association (RTNDA) and Alpha Epsilon Rho, a professional broadcasting fraternity. UBS produces Jackson Tonight!, a half-hour television magazine aired on local stations as well as producing a syndicated game show and Union’s basketball games. The Society seeks to strengthen students’ contacts with professionals in the broadcasting industry.
