Next spring, George Guthrie will be
on study leave at Tyndale House, a biblical studies
library at Cambridge University in England. The research
will enable him to write volume two on 2 Corinthians for
the Baker Commentary on the New Testament, published by
Baker Book House. “During my time at Tyndale House,”
he said. “I will be doing research for the commentary,
in primary source materials, as well as secondary
literature.” The commentary on 2 Corinthians will
move Guthrie to a platform as a specialist in the New
Testament book. He will apply a method of discourse
analysis that he developed, currently being used by
other New Testament scholars. Guthrie’s quest for
academic excellence has earned him national acclaim.
Recognized as the premier scholar in the country on the
book of Hebrews, he wrote the section on Hebrews for the
Zondervan Illustrated Bible Backgrounds Commentary. That
book was awarded the Evangelical Christian Publisher’s
Association Gold Medallion for Reference Works and
Commentaries. Guthrie believes the work on the 2
Corinthians commentary will enhance his teaching at
Union. “The rigorous study of 2 Corinthians will
provide a higher level of excellence both in the
classroom and in interaction with students as they
translate and research the New Testament,” he said.
Since 1990, Guthrie has been teaching in the School of
Christian Studies, first as an instructor in religion
and philosophy and then as the Benjamin W. Perry
Professor of Bible and chair of the School of Christian
Studies. President David Dockery believes Guthrie is
a good fit for Union. “George Guthrie brings together
head and heart as well as anyone I’ve ever known,” he
said. “When I think of George Guthrie, I think of
careful scholarship, a superb teacher and a godly
person.”
