In Fall 2005, the Office of Campus Ministries asked the School of Education
to supervise a GO Trip to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, working at Haven of Peace Academy.
The team of future teachers worked with Bethany Davis, a graduate of Union's Teacher
Education Program, who has been teaching at HOPAC for two years as a journeyman through the
Southern Baptist International Mission Board. The team consisted of Ruth Barnes,
Susan Briggs, Marci Coleman, Sally Goulooze, Kari Mynatt, and faculty member Dr. Dottie Myatt.
Each future teacher was paired with a HOPAC primary teacher and planned learning
activities for the week. At the end of the week, each class showcased what was learned at
the "Celebration of Learning." The experience was life-changing for the Union students, and
plans are for a team to return to HOPAC in 2007. All future teachers at Union are encouraged
to consider participating in the GO Tanzania Education Team in 2007.
