Interview with Julie Powell, Physical Education, Wellness & Sport - recipient of the Teaching and Learning Grant-Conference Attendance

1. Briefly describe what you did with your Teaching and Learning Grant.

I attended the Lilly Conference in North Carolina.

2. How was your teaching and your students’ learning enhanced by this grant?

This year’s conference theme was “Millennial Learning: Teaching in the 21st Century” which provided a foundation for all of the sessions. I gained insight into my teaching methods, such as the infusion of the Flip Video in the classroom, to communicating with today’s college students. I attended a great session on classroom management which really emphasized the importance of laying a foundation and developing a connection with your students before you ever cover content information.

3. How did (or might) this grant award lead to other opportunities to further develop your teaching and enhance learning?

One, not only do you walk away from the Lilly Conference with an abundance of techniques to implement in the classroom, you learn about different approaches those in higher education are using to reach students. Two, you connect with other professionals who are doing things at their institution you might want to try here at Union. You develop a resource of professionals to assist you in trying new methods. Three, I also learned of other conferences after talking with professionals here that I might be interested in attending in the future.
