During the summer months,
Dr. Jim
Patterson spent time
traveling in Belgium, France and Poland. He also received the
Lynn May Study Grant to do research on J.R. Graves, a
19th-century Union trustee and "Father" of Landmarkism, at the
Southern Baptist Historical Library and Archives in Nashville.
His research was completed in July 2004 for a forthcoming
article in
Tennessee
Baptist History Journal.
Back in April Dr. Patterson chaired a session at the
Christianity and the Academy conference, held at the University
of Memphis. |

Dr. David Gushee’s
newest book,
Getting Marriage Right
was excerpted in both
Christianity Today
and
Books and Culture
in September 2004.
Kingdom Ethics, co-written in 2003 with Glen Stassen, was named best theology/ethics book in the
Christianity Today

Dr. George
Guthrie presented a paper
at the national meeting of the Evangelical Theological Society
in Atlanta, GA (November 2003) entitled
“Did You
Hear That?: Old Testament Christological Echoes in Hebrews,”
and two papers at the
national meeting of the Society of Biblical Literature:
“New
Testament Conundrums and Discourse Analysis: Answering Stan
Porter’s Call (A Contextual Analysis of the Use of Psalm 8:4-6
in Hebrews 2:5-9; presented with Russ Quinn, a former student),”
and “Strive to Enter—What?: Hebrews’ Appropriation of the ‘Entering
Rest’ Motif.” Dr. Guthrie
also has made several appearances on “In the Studio with Michael
Card,” an internationally syndicated radio show on the Moody
Broadcasting Network. The most recent appearances were a
four-part series in Sept.-Oct. 2004 on “Characters from the
Gospels.” Dr. Guthrie also has recently served as a consultant
on Hebrews-Jude of the New Century Version for Nelson
Publishers. |

In
May 2004,
Dr. Ray Van
Neste traveled to the
International Baptist Church in Aberdeen, Scotland to do a
weekend conference on church health and polity. In addition to
serving as one of the co-pastors of Cornerstone Community Church
(SBC), Dr. Van Neste began serving as interim pastor of Pleasant
Plains Baptist Church in August. |

In November 2003
Dr. Brad Green
presented a paper entitled "The Protomodern Augustine? Colin
Gunton and the Failure of Augustine" at the Augustine and
Augustinians Consultation, which took place during the American
Academy of Religion Annual Meeting. Dr. Green also presented a
paper on "Richard Weaver and the Gospel: Christian Themes in the
Thought of Richard Weaver" at the Christianity in the Academy
Conference, April 2, 2004. In addition to teaching, writing and
speaking, Dr. Green continues to serve as Head of School at the
Augustine School in Jackson. |

Dr.
Mark Dubis
spent the summer engaged in a research project funded by Union's Pew
Summer Research Grant program. |
|
Dr. Kelvin Moore
was named Faculty Member of the Year during Union’s Awards Day ceremony on May 7th, 2004. |
