Converging media is a reality in the communication field—and a passion for Chris Blair. Since joining the faculty at Union University, he developed the interdisciplinary Film Studies minor and was instrumental in developing the Digital Media Studies program that combines courses and faculty from Art, Communication Arts and Computer Science. He continues to serve as the coordinator of the DMS program, and now, as department chair, he is spearheading efforts by departmental faculty to meet the demand for graduates who have skills in multiple areas.

"Communication is changing rapidly, and students need to be more versatile," Blair said. "In the DMS program, we talk about preparing students to be ‘T-shaped,’ having a breadth of knowledge and experience in a number of areas while having one area of true expertise."

For example, a DMS major with a communication arts emphasis takes classes in art, computer science, as well as broadcasting, journalism and public relations. While they can handle the design and technical aspects of an interactive project, their true expertise is in creating the content for the project—the text, images, and video needed to communicate the message.

Blair is an alumnus of Union University, where he received a Bachelor’s degree in Communication Arts and Religion. He went on to earn Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Communication from the University of Memphis.

Blair has the distinction of being one of the founding members of the International Digital Media and Arts Association (www.idmaa.org), where he currently serves on the executive committee of the board of directors. He is also active in the Tennessee Communication Association. Blair has written in the areas of digital media education and mass media regulation and teaches courses in video production, interactive media, film studies and communications law.

He is married to Ashley Blair, who also teaches in the department, and is father to Madeline and Seth. The couple became engaged as students at Union in the landscaped "U" on campus.

"Union has played an important role in our lives," Blair said. "It's a privilege for me to lead Union students to be competitive in a field that is shaping our culture.
