Steve Beverly is probably the only Union faculty member whose biography appears in the online encyclopedia, Wikipedia. Almost immediately, the article sends the reader to Beverly’s online game show magazine, TVgameshow.net, which notes it has been visited 10,125,597 times. If you missed your favorite game show this week, you can find out what happened on this website. Obviously, it happens a lot.

Beverly is known as “Mr. Game Show,” because he has a passion for them. A frequent contributor to Television Week magazine, he has been interviewed by more than 150 publications on game shows and other media issues. He also has appeared on ABC News 20/20, NBC Nightly News, Today, Bravo, A&E and ESPN’s Cold Pizza.

Beverly himself has created three gameshows: Head 2 Head, a high school quiz show, Everything But the Truth and I’ve Heard That Song!, a music trivia game show.

That’s one hat Beverly wears—but it isn’t the only one. Before joining the Union University faculty 14 years ago, he was a successful news professional. Beverly has served as a reporter, anchor and producer for WRBL-TV and WTVM in Columbus, Ga., the assistant news director for WSPA in Spartanburg, S.C., the news director at WWAY-TV in Wilmington, N.C. and news director in Savannah, Ga. And Jackson, Tenn.

Because of his outstanding work, Beverly’s news departments in Savannah and Wilmington each won AP Pacemaker Awards as Outstanding News Operation in 1983, 1984 and 1986. Some of his other awards include 15 Associated Press and United Press International awards for reporting and a Georgia Bar Association award for a radio documentary.

"With 20 years of broadcast journalism experience, I've encountered virtually everything these students will face as they are learning the craft,” he said. “When they run into roadblocks or face frustrations, as they inevitably will, I can relate stories from my experiences of the past because I've been there."

Beverly began his broadcasting career early in life and at the age of 14 began announcing play-by-play for high school sports in Georgia. He went on to become the voice of the last University of Georgia men’s freshmen basketball team for the 1975-1976 season. He was also the broadcast coordinator for Mississippi State University and for Auburn University.

Beverly is known as the voice of the Union Bulldogs and the Lady Bulldogs basketball teams, as well as on the NAIA Video Network for the NAIA Division I women’s national championship basketball tournament.

His academic credentials include an undergraduate degree in broadcast news from the University of Georgia and a master’s degree in communication from Auburn University. He is a member of the Radio-Television News Directors Association and the Tennessee Communication Association and serves on the executive board of Game Show Congress, a not-for-profit association for the promotion of the game show and quiz event industry.

As Beverly shares his broadcasting expertise in the classroom at Union, he says he encourages students not be afraid of making a mistake.

“I’ve been in broadcasting since 1968,” he said. “That experience has taught me with the vast volume of decisions one has to make, quick alterations which have to be made to schedules, or adaptations to changes which are required, mistakes are going to be made. It's learning from each mistake and how to prepare well enough to minimize mistakes which is part of the learning and teaching process. The process of learning from mistakes early is what builds excellence in the professional world."
