Union University Bulldog Basketball
Union basketball home games are televised live on the local cable system, E+ Broadband, and broadcasting students are involved in all areas of production, in front and behind the camera, on the court and in the remote production trailer.
Jackson 24/7
Broadcast Journalism, Journalism and Media Communication majors have the opportunity to work on Jackson 24/7, a daily, 30-minute news program aired live on the local cable system. Students work on all aspects of the show's production, serving as anchors, camera operators, directors, producers and reporters. Jackson 24/7 is televised from Union's new High Definition Television Studio.
Broadcasting Student Trips
Broadcasting majors have opportunities to visit stations and production companies across the country through student trips. Broadcasting majors have seen the behind-the-scene workings of CNN and NBC Universal, as well as network affiliate stations, such as WXIA in Atlanta, WYFF in Greenville/Spartanburg, SC, and WSM in Nashville. These trips often result in internships and possible careers for Union students.
Circles of Hope telethon
Union broadcasting students help produce the annual Circles of Hope telethon. Working with local ABC affiliate WBBJ-TV the Circles of Hope telethon, focused on the prevention of child abuse, is televised live from the Carl Perkins Civic Center in downtown Jackson. Union students and alumni work together to produce and direct the televised portion of this important civic event.
Broadcasting Internships
Union faculty help students connect with professionals in their fields through internships. Most Broadcasting majors complete at least one internship. The departmental faculty network continually with professionals around the country to assist students with that perfect intern fit. Recent Broadcasting students have interned at the Boston Red Sox, Good Morning America, the Jeopardy College Championship, as well as network affiliates in Memphis, Nashville and across the Southeast.
Head 2 Head
Head 2 Head is a high school scholarship game show that pits students from the surrounding 17 counties against one another in a number of rounds covering general knowledge and current events. The winner of the tournament walks away with a $1000 scholarship to the school of their choosing. Broadcasting students lead in all areas of the production of Head 2 Head, as producers and directors, camera operators and the “quizmaster.” Head 2 Head is televised both on the local cable system, E+ Broadband, and the local PBS affiliate station, WLJT-TV.
*The department discontinued the production of Head 2 Head in Spring 2008 after six successful seasons. This will allow broadcasting students to focus their attention on our new live 30-minute news program, Jackson 24/7.
Focus on Jackson
Focus on Jackson is a weekly news magazine that provides news and commentary about the current events of the region. Televised on E+ Broadband, the show is produced by Broadcasting professor Steve Beverly and hosted by Broadcasting major Matthew Kuchem.
*The department discontinued the production of Focus on Jackson in Spring 2008 after the February 5th tornado and aired a special series titled Focus on Recovery. This Fall semester broadcasting students will focus their attention on our new live 30-minute news program, Jackson 24/7. |
