May 2008--Dr. Jeannette Herring Russ of the Department of Engineering has been elected to be Union University's Faculty of the Year.

THE UNION UNIVERSITY FACULTY OF THE YEAR is awarded annually as a joint venture involving the Student Government Association and the faculty of Union University.  The criteria for the award are: (1) Classroom/Laboratory/Studio Teaching, (2) Faculty Professional Development Activities, (3) Off-Campus Community Activities, (4) On-Campus and Local Church Religious Activities, (5) Extra-Curricular Student Activities.

May 2008--Dr. Jay Bernheisel of the Department of Engineering has been elected to receive the Union University's Howard Newell Innovative Teaching Award.

THE HOWARD NEWELL INNOVATIVE TEACHING AWARD recognizes faculty members who have demonstrated creativity and innovation in classroom teaching.  Selections are made by a faculty committee.  The award is given in honor of Dr. Howard Newell(University Professor of Business, 1982-present) in recognition of his years of service as Union University’s provost, 1989 to 1998.

Union University Engineering 2nd GO Trip to North Africa.  The trip was led by Engineering faculty Dr. Randal Schwindt.  Engineering students Andy Robinette and Joshua Brooks were among other team members from Chemistry and Language department.  The Team spent a week in North Africa to do soil and water testing in their solar energy engineering feasibility study.

Union University Engineering Student Team (Josh Shrewsberry, Jeremy Sullivan, Zack Jacskon, Will Trautman) to compete in the upcoming Robot Competition at the SE IEEE annual conference in March 2007 in Richmond, VA.

New graduates
Congratulations to our 2006 engineering graduates: Ginger Allen, Jon Brasher and David Foster.

Patent Applications
Students Joshua Brooks, Debi Eley, and Keri Harwood, together with Professor David Burke, submitted a patent application on a Hideaway Caster design. This is a joint effort between Engineering and Communication Arts department. The design is expected to maximize stage engineering and setup time as well as stage safety.

Spring 2006 Student Presentations
Many teams of engineering students conducted and presented the following projects at the end of the Spring 2006 semester:

  • Using video tape evidence to calculate the speed of a car involved in a vehicular accident in a parking lot.

  • Calculating the operating cost to raise the temperature of an Olympic-size swimming pool one degree from 80 to 88 F.

  • Demonstrating the wave propagation equation experimentally using a shaker table.

  • Solid modeling using ProE and AutoCAD.

  • Designing a bone-dry system to aid the garden-hose manufacturing process.

  • Demonstrating the relationship between a motor's speed and the frequency of the power supply.

  • Studying the economic feasibility of various solar energy project proposals in a North African Country.

  • Designing a robot to expedite the process of sorting out packages by destination, picking them up, and delivering them to the correct departing aircrafts.

  • Lockheed Martin Engineer Speaks to Union Students About Space Exploration
Union Engineering welcomed Mr. Jim Beseda of the Lockheed Martinn Space System Company to the campus on April 3 to give an Engineering seminar on NASA's plan to return to the moon with the conceptual design of the Crew Exploration Vehicle. Press Release

    IEEE-SE/FedEx Robot Competition
Union Engineering students participated in the robot competition sponsored by IEEE-SE and FedEx Corporation in Memphis. During the 2 days of tough competition (March 31 and April 1, 2006), the Union team emerged with an impressive 5th place out of a 25 competing teams. Congratulations to David Foster, Josh Shrewsberry and Zack Jackson.

Mid-south Annual Engineering and Science Conference
Dr. Don Van, Chair of the Engineering Department at Union University, gave a presentation on Establishing a Quality Program for Engineering Education — the Industry's Style", at the Mid-south Annual Engineering and Science Conference (MAESC). Union was among the sponsors of the March 31st event.

Union Engineering Students Participate in Mission Trip to North Africa
A group of Engineering students led by, Dr. Randy Schwindt, went on a mission trip to North Africa in March. Their mission was to conduct a feasibility study to bring solar energy to a rural location where there has been no electricity. Their investigations included the possibilities of solar heat and cooling, PV power generation and other passive solar energy applications. Press Release

    Homecoming
The Union Engineering Department welcomed back its first class of graduates to participate in a departmental homecoming reception, February 17-18.

    Fall Student Presentations
Engineering students conducted presentations of their engineering projects during the week of December 5, 2005. Highlighting the skills acquired during the semester, presentations were given on the following topics:

    • Robotics

    • OpAmp Circuit Design

    • Virtual Bridge Design and Analysis

    • Design of Experiment Using Actual Data From The Manufacturing Floor

    • Virtual Basic For Application As It Applies To Engineering Education

    • Solar Energy Design With Sun Tracking Mechanism

    • Industry-Sponsored Capstone Design I Project

    • A Milestone Was Made!!!

On May 21, 2005, Union University graduated its first class of engineering students. Four years of hard work on both the part of faculty and students have resulted in five new engineers. These graduates are ready to tackle problems on the manufacturing floor, in laboratories, and in graduate schools.
