Engineering Junior Caroline McConnell was awarded an Undergraduate Research Grant to conduct engineering research in Thermal Design Optimization under Dr. Georg Pingen's supervision. The project is being planned to be presented at the AIAA Multi-Disciplinary Analysis and Optimization Conference in the Fall 2012.
Engineering Seniors are working on three capstone design projects (1) a trench cleaning robot sponsored by the Diamond Foods Company, (2) a non-grid cashew project to stream line the roasting, seasoning, and packaging process for use in third-world countries, and (3) a Human-powered vehicle for competition purposes. All these are being planned for April-May deliveries.

During the last week of November in the fall semester, Engineering students made the following public presentations:
- The Use of Steam as an Energy Source in a Piston-Driven Engine.
  - Students: James Avery, Ryan Substad, Wilson Holland and Jonathan Gwaltney. The project was sponsored by Dr. Georg Pingen
- A Bright Idea: Analyzing Energy Savings from Turning off Desk lamps in Union Offices
  - Students: Rachel Carbonell, Caroline McConnell, Joel Ingram and Jonathan Gwaltney. The project was sponsored by Dr. Georg Pingen
- Fuel Efficiency Relative to Air Intake
  - Students: Tom Drury, Phillip Johnson, Kian Jost and Ryan Substad. The project was sponsored by Dr. Georg Pingen
- The Aerodymanic and Heat Transfer Properties of a Solar Panel
  - Students: Eric Olson, Rob Calvert, Aaron Porterfield, John Hall and Nate Peterson. The project was sponsored by Dr. Georg Pingen
- T-Shirt Launcher. The project was sponsored by Dr. Randy Schwindt
- Digital Logic in Elevator's Controls
  - Students: Sophomores. The project was sponsored by Dr. Randy Schwindt and Mr. Ethan Wilding.
- AC-DC Converter
  - Students: Juniors. The project was sponsored by Dr. Randy Schwindt and Mr. Ethan Wilding
- Engineering a Communication of Financial Matters--Analyzing a Case Study or a Corporation's Financial Statement.
  - Students: Juniors. The project was sponsored by Dr. Don Van
Graduating engineering students each gave a brief seminar on engineering ethics by (1) presenting a case study, (2) telling how ethical issue is recognized, and (3) telling how they would act in each case. It was on Wednesday May 11, 2011.

Union Engineering students participated in the Union University Scholarship Symposium (UUSS) by presenting 12 different very interesting projects highlighting their theoretical and practical learning. Dr. Schwindt and Dr. Pingen led a GO trip in March 2011 to North Africa. Senior engineering students conducted project in the area of renewable energy as it applies to community facilities there.
