Spring 2008 Department Awards

Phi Alpha Theta Scholarship Pin - For the graduating senior member of the society who has a major in history and who has a grade point average of 3.5 or better in that discipline. This year’s winner is Mary Beth Johnson.

History Major Award - For a graduating senior history major who has done outstanding work in history courses at Union. This year’s winners was Abby Carpenter.

History Minor Award - For a graduating senior history minor who has done excellent work in history courses at Union. This year’s winners are Marielle Dirkx and Andrew Gray.

History Student Teacher Award – For a graduating senior history major in secondary education who has shown exceptional commitment to achieving excellence in classroom teaching. This year’s winner was Nikki Henry.

History Department Service Award – For a graduating senior history major who has shown exceptional commitment to participating in department activities during his or her student years at Union University. This year’s winner was Cameron Armstrong.

The James Alex Baggett History Research Awards -- For the best papers presented as part of the requirements in any history course. Papers are judged on the use of primary sources, the originality of the topic, the historical quality and depth of the study, writing style, appropriate footnoting or endnoting, and a correctly done bibliography. This year’s winners were:

  • First Place - Mary Thompson
  • Second Place - Cameron Armstrong
  • Third Place - Abby Carpenter
  • Honorable Mention - Kathleen Cooper
  • Honorable Mention - Daniel Freeman

Recognition for Club Presidents:
Each year the department gives certificates of appreciation to the presidents of department-related student organizations. This year certificates go to:

Political Science Major Award - For a senior political science major who has done exceptionally high quality work in political science courses at Union. This year’s winners are Derrick Lambert and Rachel Winford.

History Minor Award - For a senior history minor who has done excellent work in history courses at Union. This year’s winners are D. L. Frugé and Amanda Norris.

Political Science Minor Award - For a senior political science minor who has done high-level work in political science courses at Union. This year’s winner is Drew Zimmer.

The Political Science Research Awards - For the best original research papers that are submitted as part of the requirements for the political science senior seminar. This year’s winners are:

  • First Place - Derrick Lambert

Dr. James Alex Baggett History Research Awards - Presented to students whose papers represent the best original research and writing in the area of history during an academic year. The winners for 2004-2005 were:

  • First Place – Sharon Hart for her paper “Zwingli: For Country and God”
  • Second Place – Heather Tobe for her paper “Little Town”
  • Third Place (tie) – John Crawford for his paper “Church Discipline as an Ideal: The 19th and 20th Century Baptists Compared;” Natalie Treece for her paper “British Appeasement: The Right Thing to Do?”

Political Science Research Paper Awards – Presented to students for the best original research papers submitted as part of the requirements for any political science course. This year’s winners were:

  • First Place – Matthew Oshel for his paper “Changes in Public Opinion on Social Issues from the Pre-Reagan Era to Post-Clinton Era”
  • Second Place – Adrienne Briles for her paper “Attitudes Toward Covenant Marriage”
  • Third Place – Joshua Allen for his paper “USA Patriot Act: Strip Liberties or Stop Terrorism?”
