Judy LeForge

Dr. LeForge earned her B.A and M.A. from Western Kentucky University. During her graduate work, she received a university research grant to complete her Master’s Thesis: “Frank Lawrence Owsley: Vindicator of the South.”

After completing her dissertation, “Tennessee’s Constitutional Development, 1796-1870,” Dr. LeForge earned her doctorate in history from the University of Memphis in 2002. Her areas of concentration included: United States History to and from 1877; 20th-Century Europe; and the Medieval/Renaissance period.

Her publications include two articles in the West Tennessee Historical Society Papers: “Tennessee’s Constitutional Conventions, 1796, 1834, 1870” (1998) and “Porter-Leath Children’s Center: Memphis, Tennessee’s First Orphanage” (2005). Dr. LeForge’s essay, “Tennessee’s 1796 Constitution and Statehood” appeared in the 3rd edition of the book Tennessee: State of the Nation, edited by Larry H. Whitaker and W. Calvin Dickinson (2006). Her article “State Colored Conventions of Tennessee, 1865-66” appeared in the Fall 2006 issue of the Tennessee Historical Quarterly. A forthcoming article, "Alabama's Colored Conventions," will appear in the next edition of The Alabama Review. She has presented scholarly papers at various conferences. Her next projects include: publishing a manuscript on black civil rights, publishing her dissertation, and writing related articles. In 2008 she received a PEW Summer Research Grant from Union University.

Dr. LeForge joined the faculty of Union University in 1999. She serves as Associate Professor of History. Currently, she teaches the following courses: World Civilization, Tennessee History and Government, Women in U.S. History, and Social Studies Methods.
