French Grammar Lessons and Resources

SCOPE OF THE COURSE The course covers the fundamentals of French grammar and pronunciation and serves as an introduction to francophone culture.

OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE The primary objectives of this course are 1) to develop the language skills necessary to communicate in basic social situations 2) to be able to handle routine transactions and tasks in the target language 3) to learn how to carry on a simple conversation in French 4) to become acquainted with various aspects of culture in francophone countries 5) to enhance the student's knowledge and appreciation of his/her own language and heighten awareness of the strong bond between culture and language.

REQUIRED TEXTS              Horizons, 4th edition, Manley, Smith, McMinn, Prevost and Cahier de laboratoire

Recommended:        English Grammar for Students of French

METHOD OF INSTRUCTION The principal goal of this course is to develop communication skills in French. Learning to communicate effectively in the classroom in the target language is the first step toward reaching this goal so French will be the primary language of communication in class. Grammar explanations in the book are in English and SHOULD BE READ PRIOR TO CLASS MEETINGS. A large portion of the class will be devoted to oral activities in large and small group settings. In order to make the best use of class time, it is essential that you prepare the assigned text book lesson prior to the class meeting.  Corresponding lab/workbook pages will be most helpful if completed as we cover points in the textbook.   However, chapter pages from the lab/workbook are to be completed outside of class and are due to be handed in on the day of each chapter exam.  Students will be asked to choose a Francophone celebrity and prepare a short oral presentation.

ATTENDANCE Regular class attendance is required. Part of your grade is based on the evaluation of your class participation and performance.  Repeated absences negatively affect this evaluation. Make-up exams will be given only in the case of emergency and will be scheduled at the discretion of the instructor. Before missing an exam or as soon as possible afterward, leave an e-mail message (vmalone@uu.edu). Unless arrangements are made in advance, all missed assignments and tests must be made up the day you return to class.

EVALUATION Exams will include evaluation of all areas of language acquisition and study--reading, writing, listening, speaking, and culture.
