A students may enter any intermediate course after completing 112 or the equivalent.
OBJECTIVES OF 211
The primary objectives of this course are to help students develop speaking and listening skills, to introduce the basic concepts of Spanish phonetics and to review Spanish grammar. The materials used in this course will also enable students to further develop their understanding of some distinctive qualities of Hispanic people, as well as their awareness of the numerous contributions of Hispanic people to our world.

Conversaciones creadoras: Mastering Spanish Conversation. 3rd ed. By Brown and Martín Gaite ISBN: 0-618-48108-7
Schaum's Outlines: Spanish Grammar. 4th ed. By Schmitt ISBN: 0-07-058047-2
RECOMMENDED MATERIALS
1. A Spanish-English, English-Spanish Dictionary 2. A high school/elementary Spanish text if needed for further grammar references.
TEACHING METHODS
We will study various chapters of Conversaciones creadoras, video programs, audio materials and additional grammar exercises during the course of the semester.
Students are expected to complete the assignments in the book and workbook before class, as indicated in the syllabus. Class discussion will be based on the information presented in the text. Most of the class time will be devoted to listening or conversation activities based on the assignment. Much of the work may be done in pairs or small groups which report on activities to the entire class. This will be a class which requires your active participation. Studies have shown that language acquisition is more productive when the student is a participator and not merely an observer.
EVALUATION
During the semester, each student is required to participate in two in-class situaciones with two other students. The situaciones are to be a maximum of five minutes long. Various opportunities are noted on the syllubus assignment sheet. Ideas are located throughout the text. Students will be graded on the situación and the grades will be determined based on each individual's performance.
Grading critieria for the situaciones are based on knowlegde and use of vocabulary, pronuciation and intonation, grammar accuracy and fluency, ability to use appropriate language strategies, content, creativity, and gestures.
During the second part of the semester, students are required to conduct two conversation workshops. These are geared to the lower level students and you will be evaluated on the following: Language strategies, visual aids, accuracy of content, oral practice exercises, and overall effectiveness.
Tests will examine your knowledge of the grammar, listening comprehension skills, and speaking skills.
Class participation is based on evidence of preparation for class and consistent effort to participate in class discussion and activities.
Final grades are determined as follows:
35% Tests 15% Situaciones 15% Conversation workshops 15% Class Discussion, Activities, and Homework 20% Final Exam
MAKEUP WORK
In case of emergency, you should call me at the office (661-5030) or at home (661-9392) to let me know of your situation. You may also leave a message with the switchboard operator or Julie Patterson (661-3151) in the Humanities area for you to call me.
I will be happy to work with you when problems arise, but you must let me know immediately if you are not able to fulfill your responsibilities as outlined on the syllabus. DO NOT WAIT until the next day or the next class meeting to communicate with me.
OTHER INFORMATION AND PROCEDURES
No question or problem is insignificant. In language study it is very common to need to hear an explanation several times, or to hear the same concept expressed in a different way. None of the materials or concepts you will study this semester are extremely x complex when studied by themselves. However, since many concepts are interdependent, the problem will seem more difficult if you try to master too much at one time. As will any skill, conversation must be practiced regularly. The more Spanish you use both in and out of class, the easier it will become for you to speak.
ATTENDANCE Any student who missed more than 7 class meetings ( approximately 25%) may receive an "F" for the course.
Three absences are allowed with no penalty. After this 5 points will be deducted from your final grade for each absence missed.
