Planning Study Abroad Experience

Begin planning your freshman year for your immersion experience.  Talk with you advisor and other students.  Materials are available about programs that our students have attended and others we recommend.  Programs to Quebec, Mexico, and Spain are offered every summer in cooperation with the Mid-Continent Consortium.  The Consortium for Global Education offers extensive opportunities around the world.

When you have identified a program:

1.      Make an appointment with Dr. Cynthia Jane through Mrs. Carol Johnson (5057).

2.      Consult with your advisor to identify potential programs.

3.      Inquire about scholarship opportunities (i.e., Union Scholarships, Powell scholarship, Rotary, externally funded scholarships, student financial aid, loans, etc.).  Explore all of your options.

4.      Choose a program which best fits your needs.

5.      Pick up a packet of materials to begin application process from Mrs. Carol Johnson.  You will be given instructions for gathering information needed for your specific program.

6.      After you receive a course list from the program you have chosen, ask Mrs. Johnson to schedule an appointment with you, your advisor and Dr. Jayne to agree upon appropriate course substitutions in your major and minor.  (If possible, do this prior to pre-registration for the semester you will be studying abroad).

        Common substitutions for summer programs.

      *Chicoutimi, Quebec – Elementary/Intermediate substitutions – 211, 212, 213, 313

      *Alicante  -- Elementary/Intermediate substitutions – 211, 212, 213, 313, 350

*Intensa – elementary or intermediate level credit only.

Be attentive to your course of study as you plan ahead.

Semester-long programs may offer more variety of upper-level coursework.

7.      Consult with Program Director, Residential Director or coordinator for specific program details.
