Great Depression & similarities to 9/11
On Friday October 29 we will host Dr. W. Gene Smiley,
economist from Marquette University. Dr. Smiley will make presentation at 8
am in BAC 44 about the Great Depression & similarities to 9/11, anyone is
invited to attend. He will also make a presentation over lunch at noon in
the Coburn dining room called "Rethinking the Great Depression."
Dr. Smiley
has written a book by the same title.
The lunch will be a little different from the ones we've
done in the past. This one is free of charge to attend the presentation.
Lunch is available through the cafeteria line. It will not be served to us.
I hope this will encourage you to encourage ALL of your students to attend.
It won't cost them anything extra. If they would like to attend but don't
want to eat lunch, there will be chairs set up for them.
I enjoyed Dr. Smiley's book, he seems like a very
personable fellow on the phone and I believe we will learn a great deal from
his discussions that day.
Oh, by the way...Friday Oct 29 is the 75th anniversary of
the "Market Crash" or "tragic Tuesday" that of course came on the heels of
"Black Thursday." The Dow Jones Industrial average fell from 320 on Oct. 21
(after a high of 381 on Sept. 3) to a low of 198 on Nov 13.
Please ask your students to sign a list to indicate if
they will be coming for lunch. We do need a rough count for the cafeteria.
Also, email me and let me know if YOU are coming or not. I will be picking
up the tab for any of you who would like to attend.
thanks!
