The Community Music Center offers programs for children of all ages as well as adults. All programs are specifically designed to meet the needs and skills of specific age and interest group. The mission of the Community Music Center at Union University is to enrich our community and the lives of people of all ages through instruction and experience in music. Our goal is to foster a lifelong appreciation of and involvement in the musical arts and to serve as a resource for the musical needs of the people of Jackson and West Tennessee. Policies

Kindermusik^® Programs
(birth to seven years)

The Kindermusik^® program is a child-centered music and movement class for parent and child to enjoy together.  Children will learn to express feelings and thoughts as well as develop self-esteem through successful participation.

Here are some of the developmental skills that this program offers:

• Purposeful musical activities foster language development, symbolic thinking and social interaction
• Movement experiences lead to the development of both fine and gross motor skills
• Sensory-motor exploration is the pathway to learning for the young child
• Aural training develops focused listening discrimination
• Solid foundation built for future vocal or instrumental instruction

• Village^® — Newborn through 18 months
• Our Time^® —18 to 36 months
• Imagine That!^® — 3 through 4 years
• Kindermusik for the Young Child^® — 5 through 7 years

Children's Chorus
(grades 1 to 6)

The Union University Children's Chorus provides an opportunity for children to participate in a variety of musical experiences including singing, playing instruments, creative activities, and music reading.  Participation in this program will enhance the child's self-discipline, self-esteem, and performance skills.  Following registration members of the chorus and their parents will meet with the director of the chorus. At this time it will be determined whether the chorister will be placed in the Prepatory Chorus which meets on Mondays from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. or the Union University Children's Chorus which meets on Tuesdays from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m.  Demonstrations and concerts are scheduled at the end of each semester for parents and members of the community.

String Instruction

The Community Music Center works in cooperation with the Jackson Sympony.  If you are interested in string instruction for your child, please call Lynn White, the Education Coordinator with the Jackson Symphony, at 427-6440.  We hope to offer a Suzuki String Program in the near future.

Private Lessons
(child to adult)

The Union University Community Music Center offers lessons and classes appropriate for any age or skill level. Each student will work with his/her private instructor to develop a course of study most appropriate for interests and ability. Private lessons are available in Voice, Piano, Guitar, and Flute. Other instruments may also be offered upon request.
