Philosophy of Discipline

Union University is a Christian educational community, which seeks to uphold the moral teachings of Scripture.  We believe that Christian character is built by experiencing and practicing the community of God’s people and is developed by self-discipline rather than an external-enforced discipline.  While there are some clear standards, which are expected of all members of the community, it is our desire to function without an emphasis on sets of rules.  We firmly believe that students develop character and self-discipline better through an educative, supportive approach focusing on grace and redemption, rather than through a punitive approach focusing on the infraction.

Every person involved with the judicial process of the University will be instructed to consider students as responsible members of the Christian community, each one with problems and needs reflective of individual maturing and self-understanding.  It is expected that students will struggle with personal values and lifestyles as a natural part of growing in community.  We wish to be sensitive to this in the process of interacting with students and provide the counsel and support necessary to promote this growth.

However, there will be times when a student has broken faith with the University community and has violated University Values to the extent that some type of punitive action must be enforced.  It is for those rare occasions that the guidelines established in the “Disciplinary Standards and Value Violation Consequences” are necessary.  The purpose is to give fundamental fairness and consistency to a student who has possibly violated a Union University Value.

Union's Five Community Values

The Union University Residence Life Experience is founded on solid pillars of time-tested, scripturally-based values:

  1. The worth of each individual,

  2. Self-discipline,

  3. Personal integrity,

  4. Respect for community authority and

  5. Respect for property and the environment.
