Housing Policy

Union University recognizes the experience of residential living as a valuable part of every students’ education by providing opportunities to integrate their faith with their daily living, develop servant leadership abilities, and build lifelong friendships. Therefore, Union has chosen to be a residential university requiring all unmarried, full-time, undergraduate students to live on-campus.  For more information refer to the Campus Life Handbook.

Union University is proud to be a residential university! Residence Life has a Tradition of Excellence; we strongly believe in the developmental values that come with the experiences of life on campus. Therefore, all full-time undergraduate students who are under 21 years of age live on campus during their college years (unless they live at home with their parents or have a medical condition requiring off campus residency). Union has made a specific effort towards a tradition of excellence through its Residence Life program. This includes our Behavioral Values, which reflect our commitment to the rights and value you have as an individual. With Christ-centered staff, relevant programming, and student-oriented service to each student, you can rest assured that your residence life at Union will be an enriching part of your college career!

Students are exempt from this policy if they meet at least one of the below qualifications and fill out a Request to Live Off-Campus form. These forms are available in the Director of Residence Life’s office:

  • They will be at least 21 years of age by September 1st of the academic year in which they are applying to live off-campus.
  • They are living at home with their parents and commuting to school. (Parents’ signature is required on the Request to Live Off-Campus form.)
  • They have a medical problem requiring off-campus residency. (Students must submit a note from their physician on the doctor's letterhead.)

Any student who moves off-campus without an exemption in writing from the university will be charged the equivalent of a room in McAfee Residence Complex ($2,450) each semester the student does not honor the university housing policy.

If a student feels he/she has extenuating circumstances which deserves consideration for off-campus residency, that student must do the following prior to seeking accommodations off-campus: 1) put, in writing, the reasons and circumstances for their needing to live off-campus; and 2) fill out a Request to Live Off-Campus form and attach all appropriate documents. Once all the documentation is completed the student will then need to wait for the next Appeals Committee review. After the meeting a representative from the Appeals Committee will contact the student with official approval or denial of the student’s request to move off-campus. If approved, the student may move off-campus without paying the housing fee.

All residental students (single or married) must remain registered as full-time students (at least 12 credit hours). If a student wishes to drop below 12 credit hours and desires to continue living on-campus, he/she must first present a request in writing to the Director of Residence Life. If a student stops attending classes without completing a formal withdrawal through the academic center, that student will be asked to move out of University Housing.

Please call The Office of Residence Life at (731) 661-LIFE for further information regarding residence life at Union. We look forward to meeting you!

FALL 2008

Resuming Fall 2008, the residential policy of Union will continue to require all students who are not 21 before September 1, 2008 to remain in on-campus housing unless they are commuting from home, part-time, or married.

Students who are currently living off-campus and are qualified to live off-campus next fall must complete a Request for Approval to Live Off-Campus (.pdf). The qualifications to live off-campus are also posted on our website under Residential Policy.
