Chapter Houses Past and Present

Union’s first school campus was in downtown Jackson, and did not move to its present location until 1979. Our first chapter house was on College Street. We are not sure of the exact location, but we do know that it was in the upstairs of a family’s home. They allowed the Lambda Chi’s to use it for chapter meeting, and quiet functions, but no parties were held there.

The second chapter house was located at 117 Main Street. This house is depicted in a picture in the chapter office. It was much better than using the upstairs of a family’s home, of course, but there was not enough room for very many to live in this home. It served as the chapter house for only a few years.

The third chapter house was located at 108 North Hayes Avenue. This is the chapter house that most alumni look back on as "the house." Sitting on the front lawn was a delta-shaped rock resting on a pedestal. This was the "Delta Rock," subject for our alumni newsletter. The house was very close to campus, and provided an excellent venue for hosting parties, social events, and housed a number of brothers.

Our fourth, and current chapter house resided at 292 Walker Road. After campus moved, the Lambda Chi’s were forced to sell the house at 108 North Hayes. It was not until September 26, 1997 that groundbreaking for the new house was made. For 18 years, our chapter functioned without a house, proving that a house does not make the brotherhood within, but rather serves as an expression of that brotherhood.
