TN State Curriculum Standards for 5th Grade Music:

Standard 1.0  Singing

Students will sing, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music.

  • 1.1 Demonstrate the ability to sing alone and in unison.

Standard 9.0  Historical and Cultural Relationships

Students will understand music in relation to history and culture

  • 9.1 Identify and discuss music from different historical periods.

  • 9.2 Identify and discuss music from different genres and cultures.

 

TN State Curriculum Standards for 5th Gr. Social Studies:

Culture

Content Standard: 1.0

Culture encompasses similarities and differences among people including their beliefs, knowledge, changes, values, and traditions. Students will explore these elements of society to develop an appreciation and respect for the variety of human cultures.

  • 5.0.03 Recognize the contributions of individuals and people of various ethnic, racial, religious, and socioeconomic groups to the development of civilizations.

  1. Identify significant examples of art, music, and literature from various periods in United States history.

  2. Describe how language, stories, folktales, music, and artistic creations serve as expressions of culture and influence behavior of people living in a particular culture.

 

TN Curriculum Standards for 5th Gr. Reading:

 

Content Standard: 1.0

 

The student will develop the reading and listening skills necessary for word recognition, comprehension, interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and appreciation of print and non-print text.

  • 1.01 Continue to develop oral language and listening skills.   

c.  Understand, follow, and give oral multi-step directions that may include illustrations.

d.  Formulate and respond to questions from teachers and other group members.

e.  Participate in creative responses to text (e.g., choral reading, discussion, dramatization, and oral presentations).

  •  1.02 Demonstrate knowledge of concepts of print.    

c.  Recognize different forms of text (e.g., poems, plays, drama, letters, ads, journalism, historical fiction, biographies, autobiographies).

  • 1.04 Use decoding strategies to read unfamiliar words.      

a. Continue to use knowledge of letter-sound correspondence knowledge and structural analysis to decode words.

 Objectives:

 TLW:

  1. Construct a list of 10 or more facts regarding slavery and the underground railroad(application)

  2. Produce a slide show of your information from #1 by creating a PowerPoint presentation(synthesis).  (PowerPoint)

  3. Create an original spiritual (synthesis), type it up in a Word document and be prepared to perform for the class (application).  (Word)

  4. Pretend you are a slave during the Civil War and justify/defend your reason for escaping (evaluation) and type it up in a Word document.  (Word)
