Introduction

This learning web is designed to refine my students' skills in drawing nets and calculating surface area and volume for rectangular prisms .  Students will use Microsoft Word to draw a net of a rectangular prism and create three dimensional drawings of prisms, Microsoft Excel to calculate the surface area and volume of different sized rectangular prisms, and the internet to explore an interactive activity related to rectangular prisms.

Duration:  1 week

Adaptations

Adaptation #1 - Before completing the tasks, all students must be knowledgeable of the content that has been taught in class.  Therefore, the duration of the the learning web is approximate.

Adaptation #2 - Extended time to complete the tasks for students who have not acquired the prior knowledge of volume and surface area that is taught during class lecture.

Adaptation #3 - Extra activities will be provided for students who have completed the learning web in one week.  Activities include additional workbook and textbook problems and manipulative activities that drive home the concepts that students have learned.  Peer tutoring support will be used to match a student who has finished with one who has not.

Adaptation #4 - Examples of completed student work are provided on the learning web

Adaptation #5 - Geo-solids will be provided as tangible examples of prisms for students who have trouble visualizing the computer drawings and representations.

Adaptation #6 - Kinesthetic learners will interact with geo-solids and water to discover volume.
