The student will learn hazardous and good safety practices for using media (clay, and glaze) and tools (kiln). They will also observe, describe, evaluate a ceramic artist’s work by research safety practices, creating a fact spreadsheet, designing a safety poster and presenting a safety presentation with design elements of their chosen artist. This learning activity addresses the following TN Department of Education Curriculum Standards:
9-12 Visual Arts Content Standard 1.0- specifically the fourth indicators at Level 1,2, and 3 that state: the student is able to
· Use media and tools in a safe and responsible manner
9-12 Visual Arts Content Standard 5.0 that states: Students will reflect upon and assess the characteristics and merits of their work and the work of others. The indicators for this activity include:
· Utilize visual art vocabulary to assess the characteristics of an artwork
· Apply specific visual art criteria when observing, describing, and evaluating works of art
· Determine the intentions of an artist in creating a particular work of art and evaluate the artist’s effectiveness in communicating ideas and emotions or fulfilling a particular purpose.

Demonstrate an understanding of the unique properties and potential of art materials and media.
Research types of media, techniques, and processes used in select works and/or by select artists
