Wolfram Award in Computational Science

The Wolfram Award in Computational Science, sponsored by Wolfram Research Incorporated and chosen by the Department of Mathematics, is presented each year to a first-year student who has demonstrated outstanding achievement, enthusiasm, ingenuity and creativity in mathematics.

George T. Crocker Scholarship

Application Please return completed application to the mathematics department secretary, located in the engineering suite, by March 17 of each year.

Eligibility Requirements: Currently enrolled mathematics majors at Union University who have completed MAT 211 and have a GPA of 3.0 or higher in the mathematics major are eligible to apply.

Joe Tucker Scholarship

Dr. Joe Tucker came to Union University 1969. He served as the Mathematics Department Chair for 22 years. During his tenure, the Mathematics Department grew from two members to seven and the Computer Science Department was added. In the 1978-79 school year, Dr. Tucker was honored for his classroom teaching and named Faculty Member of the Year. Dr. Tucker retired in 1991. The Dr. Joe Tucker Scholarship was created to honor Dr. Tucker's years of service to Union University.

Application

Application Applications are available online as well as from the department secretary's office (located in the engineering suite). Please return completed forms to the department secretary by March 17.

Criteria for Awarding the Scholarship
  1. A student recipient must have junior or senior classification, be a mathematics or computer science major or minor, and have junior or senior standing in the major/minor for which the award is made during the term(s) the scholarship is received. The meaning of junior or senior standing in the major shall be as determined by the scholarship committee.
  2. A student recipient must have completed at least one year of study (two full-length semesters) at Union University.
  3. A student may specify on his/her application for the scholarship the term(s) for which he/she is applying for the scholarship, to include Fall, Spring, or any Summer term. The student must be enrolled in the semesters requested for the full scholarship to be awarded.
  4. A student recipient must have a GPA of 3.00 or higher in the major/minor for which the award is made, and 2.75 or higher overall, through the term(s) immediately preceding the receipt of the scholarship.
  5. Applications shall be received in the spring semester (application process and deadlines to be determined by the scholarship committee) for awarding of scholarship(s) during the following academic year (fall through summer).
  6. Before the fund grows to the point where multiple scholarships can be granted, priority for awarding scholarships shall be established as follows (for academic years in which the students receive the scholarships):
    • Odd-year fall through even-year summer: a. MAT major, b. CSC major, c. MAT minor, d. CSC minor
    • Even-year fall through odd-year summer: a. CSC major, b. MAT major, c. CSC minor, d. MAT minor
  7. After the fund grows to the point where multiple scholarships can be granted, scholarships shall be granted to students in both disciplines in an equitable manner as determined by the scholarship committee and the department(s) of mathematics and computer science.
  8. When determining the recipient(s) of the scholarship from among the applicants, the committee shall consider the applicants' GPA/academic success, financial need, leadership or leadership potential in KME, ACM, or other departmental activities, and character.
