Commercial Music Audition Requirements

For Commercial Music Major-Performance

  1. One Commercial Song: either a worship chorus, CCM or Gospel song that shows the student's ability to sing or play their primary instrument. Those intending to study voice as their primary applied area are expected to demonstrate advanced proficiency and artistic potential in vocal performance. Instrumentalists are also expected to demonstrate a high level of performance proficiency and artistic potential on their primary instrument. For instrumentalists, singing on their chosen song is optional. Students intending to study percussion or drum set as their primary applied area should be prepared to perform a solo musical selection with or without track that demonstrates advanced skill as a percussionist.
  2. One Commercial Song in a contrasting style (jazz, pop, rock, r&b, latin or country) in order to show diversity. (The style and genre of this selection is the student's choice.) Additionally, drum set players should be prepared to demonstrate a brief rhythmic "feel" in at least 2 of the following contrasting styles: swing, latin, or pop/rock.
  3. Optional - One Traditional selection, either a Classical art song/aria or a traditional hymn done in classical style for singers. For pianists, this can be a selection from the Classical standard repertory or a transcribed hymn arrangement. For instrumentalists and percussionists, this traditional/classical selection may be a traditional hymn transcription, a prepared solo from the concert band literature, or a standard symphonic excerpt.

For Commercial Music Major-Songwriting

  1. One Commercial Song: either a worship chorus, CCM or Gospel song that shows the student's ability to sing or play their primary instrument. Those intending to study voice as their primary applied area are expected to demonstrate vocal skill and potential. Instrumentalists are also expected to demonstrate skill and potential on their primary instrument. For instrumentalists, singing on their chosen song is optional. Students intending to study percussion or drum set as their primary applied area should be prepared to perform a solo musical selection with or without track that demonstrates advanced skill as a percussionist.
  2. An original song performed by the student that demonstrates songwriting ability. Lyrical content should be representative of Union University's mission and values, even if the song is not overtly Christian in message. (i.e. positive Pop, Country, R&B, jazz, etc.).
  3. Optional - One Traditional selection, either a Classical art song/aria or a traditional hymn done in classical style for singers. For pianists, this can be a selection from the Classical standard repertory or a transcribed hymn arrangement. For instrumentalists and percussionists, this traditional/classical selection may be a traditional hymn transcription, a prepared solo from the concert band literature, or a standard symphonic excerpt.

For Commercial Music Major-Recording Engineering & Producing

  1. One Commercial Song: either a worship chorus, CCM or Gospel song that shows the student's ability to sing or play their primary instrument. Those intending to study voice as their primary applied area are expected to demonstrate vocal skill and potential. Instrumentalists are also expected to demonstrate skill and potential on their primary instrument. For instrumentalists, singing on their chosen song is optional. Students intending to study percussion or drum set as their primary applied area should be prepared to perform a solo musical selection with or without track that demonstrates advanced skill as a percussionist.
  2. A recorded/produced mix or programmed track demonstrating the student's current level of production skills and ability to use recording technology.
  3. Optional - One Traditional selection, either a Classical art song/aria or a traditional hymn done in classical style for singers. For pianists, this can be a selection from the Classical standard repertory or a transcribed hymn arrangement. For instrumentalists and percussionists, this traditional/classical selection may be a traditional hymn transcription, a prepared solo from the concert band literature, or a standard symphonic excerpt.

For Commercial Music Major-Arranging & Composition

  1. One Commercial Song: either a worship chorus, CCM or Gospel song that shows the student's ability to sing or play their primary instrument. Those intending to study voice as their primary applied area are expected to demonstrate vocal skill and potential. Instrumentalists are also expected to demonstrate skill and potential on their primary instrument. For instrumentalists, singing on their chosen song is optional. Students intending to study percussion or drum set as their primary applied area should be prepared to perform a solo musical selection with or without track that demonstrates advanced skill as a percussionist.
  2. An original composition or arrangement demonstrating the student's current ability to craft commercially viable music.
  3. Optional - One Traditional selection, either a Classical art song/aria or a traditional hymn done in classical style for singers. For pianists, this can be a selection from the Classical standard repertory or a transcribed hymn arrangement. For instrumentalists and percussionists, this traditional/classical selection may be a traditional hymn transcription, a prepared solo from the concert band literature, or a standard symphonic excerpt.
