Five Outstanding Students Graduate

This Spring, the Department sent five new graduates into the world. While the Spring semester had a few bumps due to COVID-19, the Department enjoyed having these seniors over the past 3-4 years. They all were very involved in campus organizations, did well in the classroom, and have bright futures ahead of them. We wish them the best!
Kathleen Balon of Yukon, OK and before that the Detroit, MI area won the Tennessee Political Science Association's John Burgess Award for outstanding work in Political Science. She double majored in Economics and Political Science and completed Discipline Specific Honors in Economics. She was very active in the Student Government Association rising to become Attorney General. She applied and was accepted to ten law schools and will attend the University of Oklahoma Law School in the fall where she received a scholarship.
HC finished her degree in three years. During her time at Union, she was an RA because she has a heart for people and used her time to mentor young ladies. She won the Department's Award for Best Paper in International Relations for her case study on sex trafficking in Thailand. This summer she will be a student minister at Northbrook Church. She will continue her work mentoring young people as an Americorps member for Youth Villages in Georgia.
Mac Hazlerig of Arlington, TN also finished his degree in three years. As one would expect for someone named for former President William McKinley, Mac won the Department's Civic Engagement Award. Mac revived the moribound College Democrat organization during his time at Union while working on multiple Democratic campaigns. He was also an excellent student and will be attending the University of Tennessee Law School on scholarship this fall.
John David (JD) Logan of Flower Mound, TX graduating after transferring into Union three years ago. JD was one of Union's outstanding debate team members and a member of Union Jaxx, the ultimate frisbee team at Union that had many successes. JD graduated with Discipline Specific Honors in Political Science. His research involved the inmpact and efficiacy of sanctions on chaning state behavior. He won one of the American Enterprise Institute's Young Scholar Awards to conduct his research. He is working for Congressman Mark Green (R-TN) now and hopes to attend law school in the future.
Peyton Scott of Clarksville, TN won Union University's Servant Leadership Award for outstanding student worker on campus. Peyton always has a smile and is willing to help others. She was very involved in her sorority Kappa Delta and community service in Jackson. She plans on working a bit before attending graduate or professional school.
