Apologetics

Christian apologetics involves giving a reason for the faith within us, clearing away obstacles people may have to considering the gospel, and answering the honest questions that people have about the Christian faith. Apologetics is not a matter of constructing logical arguments or winning debates because faith does not come through either of these methods. Yet, apologetics does involve the development of rational thought about the faith which may be persuasive. The stumbling blocks to faith differ from person to person, and the School of Theology and Missions at Union University takes a comprehensive approach to dealing with the obstacles to faith. Some people have questions about the Bible which range from why it is different from any other religion's holy book to why it is inspired and the Gnostic Gospels are not. Some people have questions about how the Bible relates to modern science. Some people wonder how we can know that God exists or that the claims of Jesus are true. Through a variety of courses in biblical studies, theology, philosophy, and ethics, the Minor in Apologetics lays a foundation that equips students with a strategic understanding of the kinds of stumbling blocks to faith that people experience an how to clear them away to allow a hearing of the gospel.
