School of Theology and Missions at Union

Biblical Studies/Languages

The Biblical Studies/Languages major serves to prepare students for a lifetime of interpreting the Bible for the sake of others. While all majors within the School of Theology and Missions (STM) are grounded upon the Bible, the Biblical Studies/Languages major is especially focused upon enabling students to effectively interpret the Bible within its ancient historical context so that they may faithfully apply it to the modern world. The study of Greek and Hebrew is required of all Biblical Studies/Languages majors since the knowledge of Greek and Hebrew significantly facilitates the analysis and comprehension of the Bible. This major, like all other STM majors, builds upon the STM's core curriculum, providing a well-rounded introduction to the Christian life, theology, church history, philosophy, ethics, and ministry. Given the particular goal, however, of preparing students to be top-notch interpreters of the Bible, the Biblical Studies/Languages major focuses upon a knowledge of Greek and Hebrew, biblical backgrounds, biblical literature, biblical theology, and contemporary application.
