School of Theology and Missions at Union

Philosophy

How can we know that the Christian faith is true? The philosophy major and minor at Union are dedicated to assessing the claims and content of the Christian faith by addressing the most challenging questions that can be asked of any worldview. Other majors in the School of Theology and Missions focus on important tasks such as learning and interpreting the languages of the Bible, gaining a detailed understanding of the books and theological doctrines of the Bible, grasping how the doctrines of the Christian faith developed through time, and gaining perspective on the history of Christianity. While our philosophy program enthusiastically encourages students to pursue all these areas of investigation, we take the further step of familiarizing students with philosophical perspectives and worldviews that either challenge the Christian faith or claim to offer viable alternatives. Students are taught strategies that will help them engage in the task of evaluating other worldview claims and offering an apologetic defense of the Christian faith. By teaching students how the discipline of philosophy developed over time, they are made aware of the arguments and perspectives of secular philosophers and ways that Christian philosophers. especially, have answered the challenges to Christianity's truth claims. At the same time, knowing how past and present biblical scholars and theologians have allowed non-Christian philosophical perspectives to creep into their theological paradigms enables students to discern between authentic biblical-theological truth and extraneous philosophical ideas that are inconsistent with that truth.
