Classics

A Classics major traditionally involves studying the history, language, art, philosophy, and literature of ancient Greece and Rome. Christian scholars were the pioneers of classical studies (Erasmus, Lefevre d'Etaples, etc.) because Christians have always cared about the historical and cultural context into which the Son of God became incarnate in Jesus. Therefore, the Union approach to classics focuses not only on Greco-Roman civilization, but also on ancient civilizations more broadly, especially the ones that impact not only the history of the West but also the development of Judaism and Christianity. Furthermore, the doctrine of the Incarnation is the ultimate justification for any Christian intellectual interest in human history and culture. And the fact that it was the Word who was made flesh in Christ also invites our consideration of the importance of the languages through which this revelation has been made available to us.
